6-APB was first identified alongside similar research at the Purdue University by a team led by David E. Nichols. This same team also developed some of the primary understanding for other potentially non-neurotoxic MDMA analogues, such as MDAI and 5-APB. In 1993, the first research paper was published identifying 6-APB or Benzofury as the research chemical stores began to brand it as such. Chemically speaking, its formal name is 6-(2-aminopropyl)benzofuran and it falls into the broad phenethylamine class.
Due to its extensive research over the years, there’s some reliable data relating to its affinity in vitro with Ki values of 117, 150 and 2698 nM for NET, DAT and SERT respectively as well as being a potent agonist for the 5-HT2B receptor (Ki 3.7 nM). This means that it may act as a potent empathogenic psychoactive chemical with stimulant and entactogen properties. Further analysis reveals that it may also act as a releasing agent to the dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine transporter molecules, much like other compounds in its class.
